eBay Bans Digital Items - Is This The End?

As many of you reading this are probably aware, eBay banned selling digital items using the fixed price format. Instead they request that your digital items be sold as a classified ad. This new policy has caused a huge stir among the eBay community because it effectively is causing hundreds of sellers of digital items to be out of business starting April 1st.

Why would a ban of digital items even come up? There must be thousands of digital items listing and selling everyday and making eBay a ton of cash in the form of listing fees and final value fees. Unfortunately, this is of little concern because the gurus at eBay know that they control the market and can set the agenda. They win either way. What money they may lose from daily listings will be recovered by the classified ads. Many sellers will attempt to use the classified ad system on eBay but will learn it is very difficult to convert sales.

The main reason for this monumental change is to eliminate the possibility of sellers gaining positive feedback at a cheap expense. Obviously listing items for cheap and getting positive feedback has been a point of contention for a while among many eBay sellers. Now with the new ban of digital items from the regular methods of listing to the classified ads, the feedback issue is negated.

So, is this the end of digital items on eBay? Hardly, what this new policy has done can be viewed positively. You just have to look for the silver lining, so to speak.

Here are some positives to this new policy:

Sure, the eBay Ban on digital items was a surprise to all of us who sell digital media, but like most things in life, if you look for a way to work around a problem or look for a solution, you will find it.

  1. Weed out the poor quality products and fly by night sellers.
  2. Allow for increased profit of the existing quality products-e.g. sellers can now raise their prices on quality products.
  3. Cause sellers to be more creative and effective in their marketing methods which will translate to better quality sales.
  4. Return some credibility back to digital media products on eBay. How many times have you purchased a digital media product and got burned or let down by it?
